Baseball Evens Series with Nevada in 11-7 Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside picked up its first win of the year on Saturday night at the Riverside Sports Complex with an 11-7 win over Nevada.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR put the Wolf Pack through a second straight 1-2-3 top of the first, this one courtesy of Jake Gebb being on the hill. The Highlander pitching staff didn't allow a single walk all night.
  • UC Riverside put the night's first two runs on the board on sacrifices. UCR lit up the scoreboard first exactly how they did in Friday's season opener, capitalizing on a sacrifice hit from Cole Koniarsky that scored Anthony Mata.
  • Andrew Rivas singled to lead off the second and stole second, later advancing to third on an error. Rivas wasn't able to make the trip to home, but UCR was nowhere close to done manufacturing runs.
  • Rudy Rodriguez IV made his initial mark on Highlander baseball in the third with a two-run RBI single into left, scoring Dominic Martinez and Jayden Lopez. An inning later, Mata took the third pitch he saw over the left center field wall to extend UCR's lead to 5-3.
  • The duo combined to go 5 for 9 on the night with three runs and eight RBIs.
  • UCR kept finding ways to score, tying Saturday's seesaw battle at seven on a wild pitch. UC Riverside elevated its lead to four runs with a five-run sixth.

COACHES' CORNER

  • "I'm extremely proud of the way the guys competed and got an early lead. Nevada battled back and took the lead on us, then we took the lead on them and got five runs back. We're looking forward to a season where everyone competes to their fullest. Having two guys have four RBIs was huge for us, as was our pitching staff not giving up a walk." - Head coach Justin Johnson

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UC Riverside had multiple players with four RBIs in a game for the first time since March 8, 2020 when UCR beat Holy Cross 20-10 in eight innings.
  • Rodriguez is also the first Highlander newcomer to record four RBIs in a game since Daniel Martinez in 2017.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside will host a doubleheader on Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex, going for the series win against Nevada at 12:00 p.m. before facing Utah Valley at 4:00 p.m.
