Softball Completes Day Two in Cathedral City

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UC Riverside dropped a 6-0 decision to Seattle and an 8-0 decision to Baylor on Saturday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Rebeca Cabezas went 2 for 3 against the Redhawks while Lauryn Garewal, Kat Montuya, Gigi Araki and Leah Brito all collected hits.  
  • Montuya led off the second inning with a single through the right side and stole second, later moving to third on a single from Gigi Araki. UCR had two runners in scoring position after Brito moved Araki over to second with a groundout.  
  • The Highlanders put runners in scoring position for a second consecutive inning in the third. Rebeca Cabezas logged a hit in her eighth game of the season with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk from Jackie Alday.  
  • Maddie Heinlin entered the Baylor matchup at the end of the first inning and instantly started dealing, recording a 1-2-3 second inning.  
  • Montuya went 1 for 3 against the Bears with a double down the left field line in the third, and Garewal provided the sacrifice groundout to move Montuya over to third.  

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Heinlin retired nine of her first 10 batters against Baylor, going 4.1 innings with three hits, a run and five strikeouts.  
  • Montuya ended her day going 2 for 6 for both games with a double and a stolen base, reaching scoring position in both games.
