Highlanders Down St. John’s in Midweek Action

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside returned to the win column on Wednesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field with a 3-2 win over St. John's.    

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UCR did all its damage in the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of St. John's fielding errors to take a 2-0 lead.  
  • The Highlanders tacked on a third run with a double steal – Lauryn Garewal was caught in a pickle and stole second wihle Cabezas crossed home.  
  • Emma Falen picked up her first win of the year in the circle, going 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Maddie Heinlin earned her first save of 2024 with 3.0 innings and a pair of strikeouts.  
  • Kat Montuya went 2 for 3 in the win with a leadoff double in the fifth.  

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS 

  • UCR has now scored in the first inning in five of its last eight games.  
  • Elise Nishimura made her second career start in as many games, occupying second base for the second straight game.  

COACHES' CORNER 

  • "I'm really pleased to see that the work we put into practice yesterday came into play today. We were able to do some really nice things defensively and capitalized on their mistakes to put us in a good position to get the win. We're looking forward to some strong opponents this weekend and are excited for some good competition to come to town." - Head coach Nikki Palmer.
