Highlanders Secure Big Team Win to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside showed out in its celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday night at the SRC Arena, using a complete team performance to down CSUN, 70-46.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside took a few minutes to create separation from the Matadors, but ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run while shooting 44.4% in the frame. 
  • The Highlanders further proceeded to double up CSUN on the scoreboard, eventually building a 25-9 lead in the second quarter. Esther Matarranz and Jaden Sanderson had four points each off the bench to help UCR generate a sizable amount of offense from its reserve corps. 
  • UC Riverside held the Matadors to just 1 of 7 from three in the first half before shooting a blistering 60% in the third and fourth quarters. 
  • The Highlanders made four of their six threes in the second half. Makayla Jackson accounted for two in the fourth quarter to help balloon the lead to 26 halfway through the frame. Jackson finished with 12 points, all from threes. 

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UC Riverside improved to 8-1 on the year when leading at halftime and a perfect 10-0 when leading with five minutes left in regulation. Saturday's win also gave UCR its third consecutive season sweep of the Matadors. 
  • The Highlanders enjoyed their best shooting night of the season with a 48.4% clip from the field. UCR also dished out a season-high 24 assists on 31 made field goals. 
  • On the other side of the floor, CSUN's 30.4% clip from the field was the lowest in a game for a UCR opponent this season. 
  • Matehya Bryant recorded her third 20-point game of the season, finishing with 20 points to go alongside six rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block. RyAnne Walters was also a jack-of-all-trades on Saturday with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
