Softball Splits Doubleheader with Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Riverside split Saturday's doubleheader with Cal Poly with a pair of close games against the Mustangs, taking game one 4-3 in extra innings before falling 5-4 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside scored first in Saturday's opener with Cal Poly on Kat Montuya's eighth double of the season, bringing around Nadia Witt and Rebeca Cabezas.
  • Montuya crossed home on a fielding error that let Jackie Alday reach first, making it a three-run third for the Highlanders.
  • UCR's defense came up with the much-needed stop in the bottom of the seventh, stranding Cal Poly runners at second and third to force the game into extra innings.
  • A couple of newcomers found a way to break the deadlock for UC Riverside in the 10th. Kamryn Davis led off the inning with a six-pitch walk and Zara Wasserman doubled down the left field line a few batters later to put the Highlanders ahead after a rain delay.
  • UCR put up runs in the third and fifth innings of game two, both coming on RBI singles from Montuya on a 1-0 pitch. Jackie Alday provided the clutch hit in the seventh on a two-run RBI single to tie game two at four apiece before Cal Poly won it in the bottom of the frame.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UCR started its Big West road schedule 1-0 for the first time since 2022 when the Highlanders grabbed a 2-1 win at Cal Poly to open conference action.
  • UC Riverside started 1-0 on the road overall for the first time since 2019.
  • Montuya extended her on-base streak to 16 games after going 2 for 4 in game two with a pair of RBIs.

UP NEXT
