Baseball Pitches, Capitalizes Way to Series-Opening Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside won its third game in its last four on Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex, capitalizing on errors and using stellar pitching to claim a 7-4 win over Holy Cross.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Julian Orozco earned his second win of the season, improving to 2-1 in his first year as a Highlander with 5.0 innings pitched and seven strikeouts, giving up just four hits.
  • UCR faced an early deficit in the first inning, but left two Crusaders stranded in the second and escaped with no further damage.
  • The Highlanders also stranded two in their half of the second, but not before Nick Poss scored on an errant throw that originally would have left the senior with a leadoff double.
  • UCR put up back-to-back three spots in the fifth and sixth innings to charge ahead with a 7-3 lead. All three runs in the fifth came on Holy Cross errors, while the Highlanders' sixth inning damage came from a double from Zachary Chamizo and a sacrifice fly from Jayden Lopez.
  • Chamizo went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs while Cole Koniarsky went 2 for 5, scoring the go-ahead run in the fifth.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Two of UCR's five scoring plays on the night resulted from capitalizing on Holy Cross errors.
  • Chamizo now has an RBI in each of his last three games and a double in each of his last four. The junior has also now scored 13 runs in his last five games.
  • UCR's pitching staff collectively recorded at least 10 strikeouts for the fourth game this season with Orozco starting now three of those following Friday's win.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside continues the four-game series on Saturday, March 9 with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
