10-6 Victory Earns Baseball First Win Over Dirtbags since 2016

LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Riverside won their first game against the Long Beach State Dirtbags since 2016, defeating LBSU 10-6 in the second of three games in this weekend's Big West series at Blair Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Three pitchers pulled together a true team win against LBSU, with Matthew Flores starting on the bump for UC Riverside and throwing five complete innings. Flores scattered five hits and let up three runs, with just two of them earned.
  • Tyler Gebb came in for 3.2 innings of work after James Appleford faced three batters in the sixth. Gebb did a great job keeping the Dirtbags offense at bay, letting up just one run on three hits and striking out two.
  • The back and forth battle between the teams saw two lead changes and three ties before the Highlanders came away with the win. UC Riverside had four multi-run innings after being held scoreless in the first three frames.
  • Skilled base running earned the Highlanders a pair of insurance runs in the top if the ninth to secure the victory, with a passed ball and a wild pitch bringing two more runs across the plate for UCR.
  • UC Riverside pounded out 14 hits (including four doubles) against the Dirtbags.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UCR breaks a nine-year and 21-game losing streak in the overall series dating back to an April 24, 2016 14-13 win at home. Tonight's road win marks the first victory for the Highlanders in Long Beach since 2015, snapping a 12-game losing streak at Blair Field.
  • Zachary Chamizo was essential to the Highlander's offense going three for five with two doubles and two RBI.
  • Cole Koniarsky extended an impressive hitting streak to 19 games, singling in the top of the fifth.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside is back at Blair Field tomorrow for game three. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
