Softball Splits Doubleheader with UC San Diego

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (15-25, 9-11 Big West) kicked off its penultimate home series against UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field with a 3-2 game one defeat and a dominant 12-4 run-rule victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lauryn Garewal quickly breathed life into UCR's offense in the second inning of game one with a double down the left field line, eventually making her way to third on a muffed throw.
  • Maddie Heinlin took over in the circle for Briza Blanco in the fourth and was able to calm UC San Diego's lineup, retiring seven of her first 10 batters. Heinlin immediately shut down the Tritons upon entering the circle by getting UCR out of a bases loaded jam to limit any further damage.
  • The Highlanders would not go down easily in game one though, generating a pair of runs in the last half of the seventh on Gigi Araki's 10th RBI of the season and a groundout from Bella Scozzola.
  • UCR's seventh-inning rally carried over to an explosive first inning in game two, where the Highlanders set the tone with a four-run first.
  • UC Riverside refused to take its foot off the gas with three runs in the second, putting a run on the board in all but one inning in game two.
  • Alexis Galvan picked up her second win of the season in the circle while Nadia Witt – fresh off recording her 200th career hit – paced the offense with a 4-for-5 outing.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trendee Kahunahana made her first career start in game two with a run and a walk.
  • UC Riverside collected its first run-rule victory in Big West play since 2022.
  • UCR's four-run first inning in game two was the team's largest this season since putting seven runs up early against Portland State during opening weekend.
  • Witt recorded her first four-hit game of the season in the back end of Saturday's twin billing and first of her career while Jackie Alday posted her fourth career game with at least three RBIs.

UP NEXT

  • UCR will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch from Amy S. Harrison Field on ESPN+.
