Highlanders claim Crossdown Showdown win on the road

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (September 12, 2024) - UC Riverside hit .328 on Thursday night at Van Dyne Gym and erased a seven-point deficit in set four to claim a 3-1 win over California Baptist in the Crosstown Showdown.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brianna Bowyer and Sophia Ewalefo led the charge early with a perfect 2-for-2 clip at the net as UCR showed its teeth early with an 11-10 lead, hitting .353 early on.
  • The Highlanders dropped a closely contested first set despite hitting .205 with five kills from Trinity Sheridan. A set loss morphed into a shift in momentum though as UCR turned the tables with a 12-3 start to set two.
  • UC Riverside finished what it started in the frame while limiting the Lancers to .071 hitting in a dominant 25-14 set two win. The Highlanders tied the set in wire-to-wire fashion with three kills apiece from Sheridan and Mia Delahoussaye.
  • Momentum switched sidelines again in set four with an 18-11 CBU lead, but a 6-0 scoring run brought UC Riverside to within a point. The Highlanders later sealed the win on an attack error.

NOTABLES

  • The Highlanders notched their first win over their crosstown rivals since 1997 when both schools played at the Division II level, and their first win over CBU under Nicky Cannon.
  • UCR also set season highs in kills (54), hitting percentage (.328), assists (49) and service aces (10).
  • Sophia Ewalefo hit .500 on Thursday 16 kills against the Lancers while Sheridan set a new career high with 14 kills.
