UC Riverside Splits Trip to Utah

Highlanders pick up first win of 2024 in four-set match with Idaho

CEDAR CITY, Utah - (September 6, 2024) - UC Riverside (1-5, 0-0) went 1-1 to complete its brief trip to Utah with a 3-1 win over Idaho and a 3-0 loss to host Southern Utah.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UCR stormed out of the gate against Idaho with a 12-4 lead after manufacturing a 9-1 scoring run with kills from Brianna Bowyer, Beatriz Silva and Carissa Wiles. The Highlanders put on a clinic at the net with a .310 hitting percentage to take a 1-0 lead.  
  • Idaho pulled a set back and tied the match at one before the Highlanders resumed the offensive momentum, this time to the tune of a .233 hitting percentage in set three for the 25-17 win.  
  • Kills came at a premium for both sides in set four as UC Riverside leaned on its defense to put away its first win, holding Idaho to .029 hitting in the final frame.  
  • UCR dropped set one against tournament host Southern Utah in the nightcap but continued to hang around in set two before notching a .258 hitting percentage in set three.  

NOTABLES 

  • Jessica Dean notched career dig number 600 in her season debut against Idaho as UCR grabbed its second win all-time in the head-to-head matchup. 
  • Trinity Sheridan, Carissa Wiles, Layla Hooks and Mia Delahoussaye all recorded at least six kills against the Vandals.  
  • Sheridan has now recorded double-digit kills in five out of six matches this year. 
  • Wiles now owns 45 kills on the year after collecting 10 all last season. 
  • Sophia Ewalefo notched all four of her kills in set three of the nightcap against Southern Utah.
