RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After a tough two game road trip to Idaho, the Highlanders returned home to the SRC and hosted an undefeated Cal Lutheran team.
Hannah Wickstrom dropped a career high 30 in the Highlanders' 64-47 win over the Regals. Wickstrom was 9-13 from the floor and 11-16 from the charity stripe to lead the Highlanders and
Makayla Minshall was the only other Highlander in double figures, scoring 11.
UCR outscored Cal Lutheran 16-9 in the first led by
Seneca Hackley's six points. The Highlanders used an 8-3 run in the final two and a half minutes of the quarter to take the seven-point lead.
In the second quarter the game started to tighten up a bit as UCR was outscored 15-12. When UCR tried to pull away in the quarter Cal Lutheran scored eight straight in a little over a minute to pull within one, 20-19. After buckets by Minshall and Wickstrom, the Highlanders took a 28-24 halftime lead.
It was the third quarter in which Wickstrom caught fire. She outscored the Regals by herself, 13-12 in the quarter scoring seven of her points from the free throw line. Minshall ended the quarter with a bucket giving UCR a 43-36 lead.
The defense picked up in the final quarter as UCR used a 14-5 run in the final 5:27 to extend its lead and gain control of the game.
With the win the Highlanders will take a 1-5 record into the Big West Bold Week as they host both UC Irvine and Cal Poly at the SRC. These will be the first two conference games of the season before conference play starts in earnest in the new year.
