UC Riverside Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Cardinal Classic

STANFORD, Calif. – The UC Riverside softball team battled in a doubleheader at the Stanford Tournament on Friday, coming up short in both contests. The Highlanders dropped a close 5-3 matchup against Portland State before falling to No. 20 Stanford, 8-0.

GAME ONE: Portland State 5, UC Riverside 3

A three-run fifth inning gave UC Riverside a late spark, but Portland State held off the rally to edge the Highlanders, 5-3, at Stanford Stadium.

Portland State took an early lead with runs in the second and third innings before adding two more in the fifth to extend their advantage to 4-0.

UC Riverside answered in the bottom of the fifth. Trendee Kahunahana sparked the rally with a double, and Kamryn Davis followed with a single. Jackie Alday put the Highlanders on the board with an RBI single, and Haley Saole delivered a two-run single to bring UC Riverside close behind, 4-3.

The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth, and UC Riverside was unable to close the gap against Portland State's bullpen.

Kahunahana and Leilani Juan each doubled, while Davis added a hit and scored a run.

GAME TWO: No. 20 Stanford 8, UC Riverside 0 (6 innings)

Facing a nationally ranked Stanford team, UC Riverside struggled to generate offense in an 8-0 loss under the lights at Stanford Stadium.

The Highlanders managed just three hits, with Kahunahana, Saole, and Juan each collecting one. Kahunahana's double in the third was UC Riverside's only extra-base hit of the game.

Stanford (6-0) took control with a three-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run. The Cardinal added two more runs in the fifth and capped off the win with a three-run sixth.
