CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – UC Riverside softball earned a gritty 3-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman before falling to Washington, 10-0, in the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
GAME ONE: UC Riverside 3, Bethune-Cookman 1
Strong pitching and timely hitting helped UC Riverside take down Bethune-Cookman in a 3-1 win at Big League Dreams.
The Highlanders broke through in the third inning when
Rebeca Cabezas doubled to right center and later scored on an RBI double by
Eta Lauti. In the fourth, UC Riverside extended the lead as
Leilani Juan and
Mariana Palazuelos reached base before Cabezas delivered a clutch two-run single to make it 3-0.
Bethune-Cookman responded in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1, but UC Riverside's bullpen held firm.
Reagan Everett (4-1) earned the win, tossing four innings while allowing one run on five hits with four walks.
Brooke Perez (S, 1) closed the door with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
Cabezas led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Palazuelos also doubled, while Lauti added an RBI hit.
GAME TWO: Washington 10, UC Riverside 0 (6 innings)
UC Riverside struggled to generate offense in the nightcap, falling 10-0 to Washington in six innings.
Washington jumped on the Highlanders early with five runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer. The Huskies added a run in the second and three more in the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.
The Highlanders continue the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tomorrow with a single game against Nevada with first pitch set for 5:30pm.
