ST. GEORGE, Utah - UCR had its hands full today taking on Utah Tech in a double header. They dropped the series opener 12-3 and looked to get back on track. They did just that taking both games of the double header, including their first extra innings win of the year.
GAME 1: UC Riverside 5, Utah Tech 4 (10 innings)
The Highlanders sent
Matthew O'Brien to the hill in the morning looking to right the ship after a tough Friday night. O'Brien was solid, throwing 5.2 innings and giving up one earned run.
Matt Hudson improved to 2-0 on the year coming in with two outs in the ninth and surrendered an earned run.
Nolan Milliman entered with one out in the tenth and slammed the door shut on the Trailblazers.
Landon Nunes got things going for UCR hitting a home run in the first on the first pitch he saw, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.
Pitching took over as no runs were scored until the bottom of the sixth when Utah Tech tied it up on a single.
Tyler Gordon gave the Highlanders the lead in the top half of the seventh on his first homer of the year and the second homer of the game for UCR.
UCR led 2-1 into the bottom of the eighth when Utah Tech scored three times on singles. Again, UCR found itself trailing going into the ninth. Down 4-2,
Manoah Chapman delivered the game time tying single driving in
Andrew Rivas and
Jaxon Byrd. With the score knotted at four, the Highlanders looked for extra innings heroics.
In the top of the tenth,
Jayden Lopez drove in
Griffin Harrison on a single to center and that was all the Highlanders needed. Lopez went 3-5 in game one.
GAME 2: UC Riverside 8, Utah Tech 6
A different vibe for UCR in the second game.
Charlie Dohemann got the start and UCR's offense started with a flurry. The scoring came fast for the Highlanders, as they led 4-0 after the top half of the third.
Jayden Lopez hit his second homer of the season in the third inning.
The Trailblazers put one on the board in the bottom of the third on a homer off of Dohemann.
UCR pushed runs across in the fourth and the sixth courtesy of
Griffin Harrison. He grounded into a double play that allowed
Robert Pitts to score and then hit his first homer of the year in the sixth on a 2-2 count.
In the bottom of the eight, the Trailblazers scored four times capped off by an Andrew Pyle double.
Nolan Milliman saw action in the second game and got out of the jam in the eighth.
UCR pushed its final run across in the ninth when Pitts reached on an error and scoring  Chapman, making it 8-6.
