UC Riverside Finishes Seventh at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The UC Riverside women's golf team secured a seventh-place finish at the GCU Women's Invitational, closing the three-round event with a team score of 900 (+36).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophia Luna led the Highlanders with a T-10 finish, carding 218 (+2) with rounds of 76-68-74. Her second-round 68 (-4) was among the lowest scores of the tournament.
Sofia Vargas, competing as an individual, also made a strong showing, tying for 15^th with a total of 220 (+4, 77-71-72).
Janna Andaya finished T-31st at 225 (+9, 73-74-78), while Mitzi Duarte placed T-40th at 228 (+12, 75-78-75).
Maleyna Gregorio tied for 47th place with a total of 230 (+14, 76-79-75).
Gabrielle Kiger rounded out UC Riverside's team effort with a 232 (+16, 76-78-78), placing T-53rd.

"This team pours their hearts into everything we do, and this week was no exception. Everyone gave maximum effort in competition, but we fell short in executing our short game and faced course conditions that caught us off guard. The team and I have work to do to sharpen our game before we head to Utah in a week and a half. Despite the challenges, our freshmen stepped up in a big way. Both Luna and Vargas finished in the top 15, with Sophia Luna's career-low 68 standing out as the highlight of the week. Her performance is a testament to the direction this team is headed."

NOTABLES

Luna's second-round 68 (-4) was one of the lowest scores of the tournament and her career low, helping her secure a top-10 finish.
Vargas finished strong, posting a final-round 72 (E) to land in the top 15.
