SAN DIEGO, Calif. – UC Riverside ended its eight-game losing streak tonight with a 7-2 win over San Diego State. The Aztecs came into the game on a five-game losing streak with both teams searching for a much-needed win.
The Highlanders started Josh Torres for the mid-week game and he went two innings and gave up just two hits. Matthew O' Brien followed, would be credited with the win, and pitched two innings allowing nothing, striking out three.
Kurt Marton and Josh Martinez followed, throwing two innings each and surrendering a run a piece.
Matt Hudson came in the ninth and shut the door and while he was not credited with a save he threw only 11 pitches.
Offensively, the Highlanders put some runs on the board and did so early in the game.
David Gibbs got things started as he came through with a clutch two out single to put UCR up, 1-0.
Landon Nunes came through with a big at bat, a walk with the bases loaded and the Highlanders found themselves up 2-0.
In the third inning
Andrew Rivas drove in the third run of the game on a ground out and UCR increased the lead to 3-0.
In the top of the fourth former Aztec,
Manoah Chapman, singled to left scoring
Tyler Gordon and putting UCR up 4-0.
In the fifth inning UCR scored three times with two of the runs coming on an Aztec defensive miscue.
Isaiah Hernandez delivered a RBI single to center and the Highlanders lead grew to 7-0.
San Diego State got two back in the home half of the seventh and that's all they would get.
UCR earned win number 11 on the year and much needed confidence going into a big three game set at UC Irvine. That series starts Friday at 6PM.
