Baseball Secures Series Win over Hawai’i

Highlanders win game three under sunny skies at The Plex

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside wrapped up a three-game set against Hawai'i on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex with a 7-4 win over the Rainbow Warriors.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR applied early pressure to Hawai'i's ace, threatening with the bases loaded in the first and second innings.
  • UH transfer Matthew Flores enjoyed a strong start to Sunday's finale with just two hits and four strikeouts through three innings. Hawai'i later broke the deadlock in the fifth inning on an RBI single.
  • Third time was the charm for UC Riverside after they loaded the bases again in the sixth, this time on Landon Nunes' third walk of the afternoon. David Whittle broke the game open shortly after with a bases-clearing double to left center.
  • Joshua Martinez wriggled himself out of a jam in the seventh with two Rainbow Warriors stranded. The sophomore had help from Griffin Harrison, who charged a routine ground ball and fielded an infield pop-up to start the inning.
  • Whittle cleared the bases for the second time on the afternoon with a three-run shot to left in the seventh.
  • Hawai'i pulled two runs back in the eighth only for Robert Pitts to leave the yard on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the inning.

NOTABLES

  • UC Riverside captured its second straight home series against the Rainbow Warriors while improving to 10-6.
  • Pitts extended his on-base streak to 16 games with his insurance homer in the seventh.
  • Matthew Flores improved to 2-0 on the year while Whittle drove in six on the day.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside returns to midweek competition next with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch at UNLV on Tuesday, March 11.
