RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Highlanders bounced back with a dominant shutout victory in game two after dropping the opener, splitting Saturday's doubleheader against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Amy S. Harrison Field.
GAME ONE: Cal Poly 5, UC Riverside 1
UC Riverside was held to four hits in the opener despite multiple late threats unable to overcome a series of small-ball plays and free passes by Cal Poly.
The Mustangs scored in four separate innings, capitalizing on a pair of hit batters, two errors, and a key two-run single in the fourth to pull ahead 4-1.
The Highlanders got their lone run in the third after
Trendee Kahunahana singled up the middle to get on base, later coming around to score on a two-out RBI double by
Rebeca Cabezas.
Haley Saole and
Isabel McElroy also added hits, while UC Riverside left five runners on base.
GAME TWO: UC Riverside 5, Cal Poly 0
Behind a complete-game shutout from
Maddie Heinlin and a four-run second inning capped by
Haley Saole's grand slam, the Highlanders earned a statement win to even the series.
After a scoreless first, UC Riverside erupted in the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Saole crushed the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall, driving in
Kamryn Davis, Kahunahana, and Cabezas to make it 4-0.
The Highlanders added another run in the fourth when
Eta Lauti singled and later scored on a two-out RBI single from
Jackie Alday.
Heinlin (9-10) was dominant in the circle, tossing all seven innings and allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Offensively, Saole drove in four and added a hit, while Davis, Kahunahana, Alday, McElroy, and Lauti also chipped in with base hits. UC Riverside did not commit an error defensively.
The Highlanders and Mustangs will close the three-game series tomorrow, Sunday with first pitch set for 12pm at Amy S. Harrison Field.
