RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside started a three game set tonight against UC San Diego at The Plex. The Highlanders looked to bounce back after being swept by UC Santa Barbara last weekend. The Tritons entered the game on three game win streak and they looked to get to the .500 mark in both overall and in conference. Tonight they did get that after defeating UCR, 7-3.
The Highlanders sent
Joshua Martinez to the mound and the lefty pitched well. He went five innings giving up three runs, on only three hits. After a home run by Colton Lomanto, Martinez settled down and kept the high powered Triton offense under control. He gave way to
Matthew O'Brien in the sixth and was charged with two more runs, as part of a four run inning by UC San Diego.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Highlanders pushed three runs across scoring three runs with two outs. It started with a double down the left field line by
Jacob Badawi scoring
David Gibbs and
Manoah Chapman. That knocked UCSD starter Matthew Dalquist and Jake Villar came in relief.
David Whittle then doubled off of Villar scoring Badawi and inching the Highlanders closer to the Tritons. UCSD got out of the inning, but held a slim 5-3 lead.
The Tritons scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth to secure the win. With the loss the Highlanders drop to 12-23. They look to snap their five game losing streak tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m.
