Highlanders Rally Late; Top Tritons

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Highlanders got a much needed win today against UC San Diego at The Plex. The Tritons were riding a 13-game winning streak against the Highlanders and coming into today's game outscored the UCR 18-3. That included an 11-0 shut out last night.

The Highlanders sent Matthew O'Brien to the mound to try and stop the six game losing streak and after a clean first inning for UCR, the Tritons struck for two.

In the bottom of the third, Andrew Rivas came up with a chance to get UCR on the board and he delivered a single to left making it 2-1 UCSD.

The Tritons scored twice in the fifth and the sixth innings. And it looked like they were going to maintain control of the game.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, trailing 6-1, the Highlanders struck three times. Jacob Badawi gapped one to left-center scoring Michael Weber and Joshua Torres. The lead was cut in half, 6-3. Two batters later, Diego Boardman came up and reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Badawi to score and UCR trailed 6-4.

In the bottom of the eighth the Highlanders needed to keep up the offensive pressure. Robert Pitts blooped a single to right field, but when the Tritons' outfielder misplayed the ball David Whittle scored, making it 6-5. Then Gibbs doubled down the third base line that just stayed fair and both Boardman and Pitts scored putting UCR up for the first time, 7-6.

Matt Hudson earned his third win of the year, throwing 2.2 shut out innings with three strikeouts.

UCR looks to keep the momentum up when they host UNLV at The Plex on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
