SACRAMENTO, Calif. – UC Riverside headed north today for a three-game set with the Sacramento State Hornets. The Highlanders entered the game and series with a 23-8 overall record against the Hornets. The last time these two teams met was back in 2014 when Sac State took two-of-three from the Highlanders. UCR looked to bounce back after a tough loss against UNLV earlier in the week.
The Highlanders sent Charlie Dohemann to the mound for the Friday night start. He surrendered two runs and was lifted in the first for Joshua Torres.
The Highlanders' righty pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
Offensively the Highlanders scored two in the top of the fourth to make trail, 3-2. The big hit came from Andrew Rivas who knocked in Landon Nunes and Manoah Chapman. For Rivas this was his third multi-RBI game of the year.
Sac State answered with three in the bottom of the fifth and made it 6-2.
The Highlanders struck back and scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Rivas collected his third RBI of the game on a single to right. Jacob Badawi followed and grounded into a double-play and Nunes came across making it a 6-4 game.
The Hornets, on a balk, got one back in the bottom of the sixth and took a 7-4 lead the final three frames.
Sac State plated one more in the eighth and that's all they needed for the, 8-4 win.
These two teams meet again on Saturday night with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
