RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside welcomed San Diego State to The Plex this evening in a mid-week game. This was the second time these two teams faced each other this year. The Highlanders won in San Diego, 7-2. In that game
Isaiah Hernandez and
Jaxon Byrd both had two hits.
The Aztecs scored one in the first, but did their damage in the top of the third when they scored four times.
Joshua Torres got the nod for UCR, went two innings and was charged with four runs. The fifth was charged to
Jaxon Byrd, who relieved Torres in the third.
In the bottom of the fifth the Highlanders got on the board.
Robert Pitts singled to right scoring
David Gibbs. Then Pitts stole second base, his 20
th swipe of the year, and with two runners in scoring position
Andrew Rivas singled to left scoring two. The Highlanders ended the fifth trailing, 5-3.
Kurt Marton came in for UCR in the fourth inning and stymied the Aztec offense putting up three straight zeros. He ultimately pitcher 3.1 innings and gave up only four hits.
Both offenses hit a dry spell. In the bottom of the eighth Rivas gapped one to left-center for a leadoff double.
Landon Nunes came up and got hit and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Tyson Reis then drove in Rivas on a sac-fly to left making it 5
-4, Aztecs. Then with a chance to tie the game,
Jacob Badawi delivered a two out RBI double down the left field line to even things up at five.
In the top of the ninth the Aztecs took the lead. After a leadoff single the Aztecs put the go-ahead run on third on a failed pickoff attempt. That run came home to score on a single to center.
Leading 6-5 the Highlanders were down to their final three outs.
David Whittle led things off for UCR with a double down the right field line.
Diego Boardman came up and on a sac-bunt a fielding error by SDSU put the winning run on first with Pitts up next. The centerfielder singled to right tying up the game at six. With the winning run 90-feet away, Rivas stepped up. Rivas singled and walked it off for the Highlanders, 7-6.
