HONOLULU, O'ahu – The UC Riverside Highlanders came up just short in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, falling 4-3 in game one before a late Hawai'i rally edged the Highlanders 3-2 in game two.
GAME ONE: Hawai'i 4, UC Riverside 3
The Highlanders erased an early deficit and rallied for two runs in the sixth, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 4-3 setback to open the day.
Eta Lauti put UC Riverside on the board in the third, blasting a solo home run to center for her third of the season. The Highlanders added two more in the sixth when
Trendee Kahunahana singled and stole second, and Lauti followed with her second hit of the game.
Rebeca Cabezas laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in a run, and
Kamryn Davis added an RBI single to bring the Highlanders within one.
Lauti led the offense with a 3-for-3 day, and Davis,
Leilani Juan, and Kahunahana also tallied hits.
GAME TWO: Hawai'i 3, UC Riverside 2
UC Riverside built a two-run lead with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the seventh, but Hawai'i responded with three runs in the bottom half to claim the walk-off win.
The Highlanders broke a scoreless deadlock in the seventh when
Haley Saole launched a solo homer to left center, followed by
Jackie Alday's solo shot to right center on the next at-bat, giving UC Riverside a 2-0 lead.
The Rainbow Wahine responded with three straight singles to open the bottom half before a two-run single tied the game and a fielder's choice brought in the winning run.
Alday finished 4-for-4 with a home run and an RBI, while Cabezas went 3-for-4 and Saole added two hits, a walk, and a run scored. UC Riverside pounded out 11 hits and did not leave a runner on base in the final two innings.
The Highlanders host Cal Poly for a double header Saturday, April 12
th with first pitch set for 1pm.
