LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC Riverside fell in the series finale to UC San Diego in an afternoon tilt. A ten run third inning for UCSD was too much for the Highlanders to overcome.
UCR started the scoring in the top of the third when
Tyler Gordon got a one out single to right field.
Esteban Sepulveda then walked on four straight pitches and that brought up
Robert Pitts. The Highlander center fielder hit the first pitch of the at bat over the left field wall, giving the Highlanders a 3-0 lead. It was Pitts' third homer of the year.Â
The Highlanders started
Joshua Torres this afternoon and in the third inning surrendered three runs. Three more Highlander pitchers pitched in the home half of the third and gave up ten runs. Five total hits, including two doubles, led to the big inning for UCSD.Â
In the top of the fourth Pitts collected his fourth RBI of the game on a bases loaded walk, scoring
Manoah Chapman.
David Gibbs then laced the first pitch he saw down the left field line scoring Gordon and Sepulveda making it 10-6.Â
The Tritons pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth for a 12-6 advantage.
UC Riverside got a run back in the top of the sixth when Gibbs got an infield single scoring Sepulveda. However, UCSD got two runs in the bottom of the sixth and took a 14-7 lead. Every time the Highlanders scored UCSD found a way to get those runs back.
In the top of the eighth the Highlanders homered twice, both
Lucas Bonham and
Ty Walton left the yard. It was the first time the Highlanders went back-to-back this season. That was all the Highlanders got and dropped the game 14-10. Bonham's homer gives him four on the season and is now the team leader in that category.Â
Next up for UC Riverside is CBU on Tuesday night at 5PM.
