Highlanders Take Game 3 Over UC Irvine

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Highlanders took game three today and sent the seniors off with a victory in their last home game of their careers. Joshua Martinez got the start for the Highlanders and the lefty went 5.1 innings giving up three runs. He got the no decision. The win went to Jaxon Byrd after throwing 1.1. He gave up no runs and only two hits. It was his second win of the year.Â
The Highlanders got on the board in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Isaiah Hernandez came through again driving in David Gibbs on a single to right. Then, in the fourth, UCR put two more runs up taking a 3-0 lead. Esteban Sepulveda hit a sac-fly to center scoring Manoah Chapman and David Whittle drove in Andrew Rivas on a single to left.Â
The top of the sixth, UC Irvine tied the game. Three runs came across in the inning. Zach Crandall doubled in two runs and a wild pitch followed. It looked like the momentum was swinging to UCI.Â
UCR got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Rivas scored on a Tyler Gordon triple. With the score 4-3, the Highlanders scored the game's final run when Robert Pitts came home on a Hernandez single. It was his second RBI of the game.Â
Marco DiGirolamo came in and threw 1.1 innings giving up nothing. He made quick work of UC Irvine and set everything up for Matt Hudson to get the save. The Highlanders' closer gave up a two out single and that was it. It was Hudson's first save of the year.
The Highlanders close out their season at UC Santa Barbara with game one on Thursday at 4:35PM.Â
