Brewer, blocking, lead the way in the Beehive State
ST. GEORGE, Utah - UC Riverside (3-7, 0-0 Big West) continued play in Utah on Friday night with a 3-0 (25-27, 17-25, 20-25) loss to tournament host Utah Tech (6-3, 0-0 Big Sky) at Burns Arena.
Andrea Brewer posted her fifth 10-kill performance of the year and second of the weekend while the Highlanders recorded a season-high six solo blocks and tied a season best for fewest blocks allowed.
UCR maintained a slight edge over Utah Tech early in set one, holding three-point advantages at various points. The Highlanders won the race to 15 after a Brewer kill sent the match to its first media timeout at 15-11.
Zeynep Belgutay stretched the lead to 17-13 with her first kill of the evening, but the hosts continued battling back. Belgutay and Brewer inched UC Riverside close to the finish line at 23-21, and the Highlanders later fought off a set point before Utah Tech closed the frame.
A kill from Brewer and an ace from Maya Barron put UCR in the driver's seat of set two with a 5-2 lead. A Malia Tanksley block briefly paused the offensive surge from Utah Tech, and a later kill from Belgutay tied the set at 14. Brewer brought the Highlanders to within one before Utah Tech forged ahead for the set two victory.
Two points from Brewer spurred a 3-0 run that brought UCR to within one at 6-5 in set three, and multiple errors from Utah Tech later on saw the Highlanders take their first lead of the set at 14-13. UC Riverside stood toe-to-toe with its counterpart for the remainder of the set, if not several points behind. UCR mounted a comeback to try and force a set four, but Utah Tech closed out the win in three.
UC Riverside held the Trail Blazers to .136 hitting in set three.
The Highlanders close non-conference play on Saturday, September 19, with a 1:00 pm PT match at Southern Utah on ESPN+.
