Jeff Smith joined the Highlanders in July of 2011 after four seasons as an assistant coach at Utah where the team won the 2009 Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament championships earning a number 5 seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

The Alma College (MI) graduate was responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Utes recruting efforts while working with the team's post players and assisting with the scheduling of games, practices and conditioning activities.

Prior to his time in Utah, Smith was the associate head basketball coach at Oakland University in Michigan where he worked from 2002 through 2007, and the assistant basketball coach at Central Michigan (1997-2002) and Albion College (1995-97).

His 2005 Oakland squad won the Mid-Continent Tournament and picked up a win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion North Carolina. In 2000-01, Smith helped Central Michigan to 20-8 record and a Mid American conference title.

During his tenure at Oakland, Smith coached two Mid-Continent Conference Players of the Year: Rawle Marshall, who played in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, and Mike Helms, who became Oakland's first Associated Press All-American and was the NCAA's third-leading scorer in 2003.

Smith and his wife, Alison, have two daughters, Marlie and Stella.
