Tommy Tate

Tommy Tate joined the UC Riverside women’s soccer coaching staff in June of 2009, bringing with him a résumé steeped in Southern California soccer. He attended the University of San Diego, playing four seasons for the Toreros, later serving as an assistant coach for the men’s team from 1996-2007 and the women’s team from 1996-2002.

As a player, Tate was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams including the 1992 squad that reached the NCAA Finals. Tate recorded 17 shutouts during his Toreros career, finishing with a 37-14-5 record as a starter. He recorded 16 wins and nine shutouts as a freshman and went 13-4 during his senior campaign.

As an assistant with the Toreros, the San Diego native helped the men’s squad to six NCAA Tournament appearances and three WCC Championships and the women’s team to five trips to the NCAAs.

In addition to coaching at his alma mater following graduation, Tate played professionally for the San Diego Sockers of the CISL (1995-96), the San Diego Flash A-League squad (1996-2001), and the MLS’s Tampa Bay Mutiny (2000) and Los Angeles Galaxy (2001).

Tate was also an assistant for the U-17 US National Team from 2002-04 and the U-15 squad in 2005. From 2002-03, he served as an assistant coach with the WUSA’s San Diego Spirit, and he now acts as the girls soccer director of Arsenal South.

Tate is single and resides in Menifee, CA
