
UCR Women’s Soccer Tops Cal State Northridge, 2-1, for Ninth Win

Riverside—The UC Riverside women’s soccer team used a pair of unassisted goals to top Cal State Northridge, 2-1, for their ninth win of the season. The Highlanders are one win away from consecutive back-to-back 10-win seasons.
Kelly Hurley chipped the ball in from 20 yards out for the first score of the game in the 11th minute to take a quick 1-0 lead, it was her second goal in as many games.
The Highlanders (9-4-2, 3-1-0 Big West) missed a few opportunities to build a larger lead, but the Matadors (3-8-3, 1-4-0 Big West) answered to tie the match, 1-1, in the 42nd minute.
CSN’s Patti Mitchell drove the ball into the box and found Wendee Lensing open who was able to slide the ball past UCR’s Tawny Poggio for the score.
The Matadors’ elation did not last long as the Highlanders’ Amber Plumlee found the back of the net less than a minute later, giving UCR a 2-1 lead heading into the half.
Cal State Northridge was able to get just two shots on goal in the second half, and was held to just three the entire game.
Poggio made two saves and allowed her first goal in over 135 minutes. UCR outshot the Matadors, 21-11, and managed 11 shots on goal.
The Highlanders will look for their 10th win of the season and third win in a row when they host Pacific in a Big West contest Sunday, Oct. 19, at the UCR Soccer Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
