UCR drops home decision to Utah Tech
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (1-3-0, 0-0-0 Big West) fell 1-0 to Utah Tech (2-2-1 Big Sky) on a hot but breezy Thursday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
Video review negated an early Utah Tech handball and UCR penalty as play was signaled to continue in the fourth minute.
UCR was forced to hold off sporadic pressure from Utah Tech, with the Trailblazers logging four shots in the first seven minutes. Jayla Justice made a needed defensive play a little under halfway through the first half.
Albertine Faye and Mia DiLeo played a back-and-forth in the attacking third in the 23rd minute down the left flank, but DiLeo's cross went well past the box. UCR avoided disaster in the 27th with a visitor corner directed just wide.
Finley Aghassi was given a pair of quality chances about 30 minutes into the night. Faye teed up Aghassi in the 29th minute off a Utah Tech miscue, but Aghassi sent it straight to Utah Tech's keeper. Aghassi received another well-positioned ball in the 32nd, this time from Harlem Hipps, but again narrowly missed the back of the net.
Justice made another stellar defensive play out of halftime. Utah Tech stayed on the ball to start the second half, but the Highlander back line and defensive midfield forced the ball back the other way.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, and UCR kept the damage to a minimum in the 61st minute with a forced shot from Utah Tech that sailed past the far post.
UCR kept the urgency on with an 82nd-minute corner that came close to leveling the match. Utah Tech's keeper rose up to grab the ball and keep the visitors in front.
The Highlanders threatened in the final five minutes despite failing to get a shot on frame.
UCR returns to action on Thursday, September 3, for a 7:00 pm kickoff at LMU.
