Freshmen continue to impress as Elliott earns first clean sheet

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-12-1, 2-7-1 Big West) exorcised some demons on Wednesday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium, snapping a six-match skid to Cal Poly (6-7-5, 3-4-3 Big West) with a 2-0 victory.

KaMia Elliott's first career clean sheet and another stellar freshman performance helped UCR win its second match in its last three. The Highlanders improved to 2-1-0 when leading at the 75th minute mark, and have now seen 19 of 39 points come from freshmen.

Morgan Humphrey put the hosts on the stat sheet first with a third-minute shot on the edge of the 18 that sailed over the bar. Natalie Darling followed suit with a pair of blocked attempts in the 12th minute.

UC Riverside held the Mustangs to their lowest shot total in Big West play, not yielding the first of five Cal Poly attempts until the 22nd minute. Elliott was called to action on three of the visitors' first four shots.

Humphrey and Lauren Nguyen rebooted the offense with shots in the 35th and 38th minutes, respectively. Both were off target from long range, but Abigail Coppolo gave UCR the 1-0 lead just before the break with a good finish from inside the box.

Coppolo finished off an almost perfect first half that saw UCR outshoot the Mustangs, 6-1.

Urgency kicked in for the away side out of halftime with four shots to UC Riverside's two, including two in the final 10 minutes.

Finley Aghassi lobbed in the Highlanders' first shot of the second half from distance three minutes before Humphrey put the game out of reach from inside the penalty area.

Not to be lost in the performances was Paige Gartner, who earned her 60th collegiate appearance with 48 minutes off the bench.

UCR will look to end 2026 on a strong note on Saturday, October 31, with UC Santa Barbara coming to the UCR Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm, and tickets are available now at GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
