OREM, Utah - UC Riverside (2-11-1, 0-6-1 Big West) played its penultimate road match on Saturday evening at UCCU Stadium, falling 3-0 to conference newcomer Utah Valley (9-4-3, 5-0-2 Big West)
Morgan Humphrey won Highlanders' first opportunity in the seventh minute, but to no avail. Utah Valley won three corners in three minutes, all three of which were denied.
The hosts finally broke through in the 15th minute for the 1-0 lead before doubling their lead in the 19th. KaMia Elliott mitigated the damage with a pair of saves in the 23rd and 24th minutes.
One of UC Riverside's fresh reinforcements midway through the first half, Ally Yoshimura, won a free kick in the 30th minute. Utah Valley turned it into a blocked shot that the back line dealt with, followed by back-to-back corner kicks.
Macie Baird went for the top shelf for UCR's first shot in the 34th minute, followed by a corner. Defending forced a pair of UVU shots off frame, and Albertine Faye won a free kick in the final minute of the half as the Highlanders looked to go into the break level.
Humphrey won another free kick in the 49th minute, and Utah Valley won a pair of corners half a minute apart. Elliott made her fourth save on the hour mark before UVU tallied a third in the 61st.
Lauren Nguyen, fresh off Wednesday's goal at Cal State Bakersfield, registered the Highlanders' second shot in the 73rd minute to try and mount a comeback.
UCR blocked another attempt in the 78th minute, and a VAR review negated a penalty that would have set up the hosts for a fourth. Elliott later denied the top shelf in the 85th.
UC Riverside returns to action and the UCR Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, October 21, in a 7:00 pm kickoff against CSUN on ESPN+. Tickets are available now at GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
