Second half goals propel UC Riverside to win
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (3-11-1, 1-6-1 Big West) secured its first Big West victory of 2026 on a rainy Wednesday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium with a 3-1 win over CSUN (5-6-2, 3-2-3 Big West).
UCR picked up its second win of the season while handing the Matadors their second defeat in their last 12 matches.
UC Riverside earned two early free kicks before Jayla Justice tried her luck from distance for either side's first shot of the night.
The Highlanders went to their bench in the 26th minute with Lauren Nguyen and Rylee Lewis coming on, and Mia DiLeo logged UCR's second shot half a minute later.
A stellar defensive start for UCR finally conceded its first two shots just before the half hour mark, with KaMia Elliott called into action on the second attempt. Elliott made save number two in the 33rd minute.
Nguyen came up with UCR's best chance in the 39th minute before Morgan Humphrey broke the deadlock in the 40th with her second goal of the year.
Natalie Darling bagged her second goal of the year in the 53rd minute, going top bins from the corner of the six-yard box for the second freshman goal of the night.
UCR kept most of the Matadors' shots after halftime well away from the 18, and Finley Aghassi buried a penalty in the 69th minute for a 3-0 lead.
For the season, the hosts picked up four more points from freshman on the Darling and Humphrey goals, making it now 16 of 32 points from Highlander freshman.
UCR returns to action with its final road match on Saturday, October 24, at Long Beach State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm on ESPN+.
