Highlanders record season-high 22 shots in Wednesday tilt
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-10-1, 0-5-1 Big West) returned to the road on Wednesday evening at Main Soccer Field with a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at Cal State Bakersfield (2-12-1, 1-5-0).
The Highlanders racked up season highs of 22 shots and 10 shots on goal, both single-match highs under Mike Dibbini.
The offense started early as UCR peppered the Roadrunners with six shots inside of 25 minutes. Natalie Darling, who opened her collegiate scoring account on October 3, logged two of those six with both being on frame.
Trinity Hale, making her second appearance this season and first start, was called into action in the 16th minute with a stop on the hosts' first attempt. Bakersfield mustered just two more shots before halftime.
Freshmen led the way with four of the Highlanders' first seven shots, a trend ended by Harlem Hipps' attempt in the 31st minute.
Sanaa Guyness saw her first shot in the 44th minute saved, but stayed in the fray and ended up assisting on Lauren Nguyen's second goal of the season for a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
UCR's 12 first-half shots were a season high, with number 12 proving to be the difference in the opening 45 minutes.
Bakersfield forced the back line into action with two shots in the opening two minutes after halftime before Humphrey recorded her second shot of the night. Daisy Miller sailed an attempt over the woodwork in the 57th minute to cement the new team season high in shots.
UCR continued breaking down the Roadrunners' structure, hitting the 20-shot mark in the 69th minute off the boot of Albertine Faye. Ally Yoshimura became the 12th Highlander to log a shot in Wednesday's tilt before Bakersfield pulled one back with a 77th-minute equalizer.
The search for a go-ahead strike called for personnel changes in the final 15 minutes with the Highlanders' biggest producers retaking the pitch, but the hosts found the winner instead with an 87th-minute strike.
UC Riverside heads out of state for the third time this season on Saturday, October 17, with a 4:00 pm PT match at Big West newcomer Utah Valley on ESPN+.
