Highlander drop road contest in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - UC Riverside (1-4-0, 0-0-0 Big West) returned to the road on Thursday night against a familiar non-conference foe, falling 1-0 to Loyola Marymount (1-4-0, 0-0-0) at Sullivan Field.

UCR played on its back foot off the whistle with three LMU corners in the first 10 minutes of the night. The hosts had the match's first looks at goal early on with a pair of off-target shots in the opening 14 minutes.

Sanaa Guyness landed UCR's first attempt in the 17th minute from distance that led to the Highlanders' first corner of the night. Abigail Coppolo won a free kick in the 30th minute and UCR retained possession shortly after.

KaMia Elliott made her first save in the 34th minute in the middle of her goal. LMU mustered another shot seconds later, but off target.

Morgan Humphrey logged a shot from inside the box in the 42nd minute as UCR pressed for a breakthrough before halftime.

Elliott made her second save in the 50th minute to the bottom left of the net to keep things level, and the Highlanders withstood back-to-back LMU corners the next minute.

Albertine Faye won a free kick in the 53rd minute, but action switched to the other end of the pitch where the Highlanders blocked a shot in the 54th. Elliott made another save from straight on in the 62nd minute, but the hosts broke the deadlock in the 63rd.

Paige Gartner tried for the near post in the 82nd minute to further UCR's pursuit of an equalizer. Faye won another free kick in the 89th minute, leading to a shot from Jayla Justice wide and a corner.

The Highlanders wrap up the non-conference schedule with two more home matches, beginning this Sunday, September 6, with a 10:00 kickoff against North Dakota at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Tickets for Sunday and all home matches are available at www.GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
