UC Riverside 1, Long Beach State 0 - Box Score
Riverside—In a must-win situation, the UC Riverside women’s soccer team answered the challenge beating visiting Long Beach State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium to give the team one of four berths into the Big West Conference Tournament next weekend in Fullerton.
The Highlanders (11-6-3, 5-3-1 Big West) recorded their record-setting 11th win of the year on a goal just under three minutes into the match. Ashlee Stephens drove the ball down the right side of the field, eluding the defender and chipping the ball to Vanessa Chanez who headed the ball past the diving keeper.
The 49ers (9-9-0, 5-4-0 Big West) had their best opportunity to tie the game in the 59th minute, as Amber Oliveira blasted a shot that drilled the crossbar to save a sure goal.
UCR had a slight 14-12 lead in the shot department and had seven shots on goal compared to Long Beach State’s four.
In just their third year of competition, the Highlanders have continued to set a standard of excellence, posting back-to-back 10-win seasons and setting a new mark of 11 wins in 2003.
The team also set a new mark with 10 shutouts in the season, eclipsing last year’s total of nine. Freshman goalkeeper Tawny Poggio posted eight solo shutouts and one combined shutout.
With UC Santa Barbara topping Utah State, 4-1, and Cal State Fullerton topping UC Irvine, 3-1, the Highlanders finish third place in the conference and will face UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Fullerton.
