UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Riverside 2 - Box Score
Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside women's soccer team fought to the last minute, but ended its incredible season with a 3-2 loss to UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference Tournament Friday Night at Anteater Stadium.
With just five minutes left in the match and trailing, 3-1, UCR's Jessica Armel found UCSB's goalkeeper out of position, taking a pass from Amber Plumlee and notching an uncontested goal.
In the 88th minute, Plumlee found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but her shot to the left was just snagged by Jamie Considine to keep the score at 3-2.
The Highlanders continued to fight to the last seconds of the match, but were unable to find the game-tying goal to force overtime.
The Gauchos (11-5-4, 5-2-2 Big West) scored two first-half goals on two corner kick plays to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Down, 2-0, in the second half, the Highlanders (11-7-3, 5-3-1 Big West) cut the lead in half on a breakaway goal from sophomore Vanessa Chanez in the 69th minute.
Just under a minute later, UCSB scored to make it a two-goal game. Jennifer Borcich took a cross from Randi Johns finding the back of the net for her second goal of the night at the 69:35 mark.
UCR led, 17-31, in the shot department, but had four of the team's six shots on goals saved by Considine. Freshman Tawny Poggio made four saves on seven shots on goal for the Highlanders.
For the second straight season in just their third year of existence, the Highlanders have posted 10-win seasons.
With the win and Cal Poly's earlier 2-0 victory over UC Irvine, the Gauchos will face the Mustangs in the championship match on Sunday with the winner representing the Big West in the NCAA tournament.
