The Sacramento State Hornets moved to 4-1 against Big West Conference opponents this season with a 66-55 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders at the Hornets' Nest in Sacramento Monday.
UCR (3-4) struggled with poor shooting, hitting just 38.6% on the evening. Junior guard Rickey Porter led the Highlanders with 13 points, but none of UCR's top three scorers reached double-digits. Nate Carter had just eight points and five rebounds, Vili Morton had nine points and six rebounds after not scoring in the first half, and Kevin Butler had six points. Junior David Jobe had his best game of the season, scoring nine points in just 14 minutes of play.
For the Hornets (6-6), Joseth Dawson had a game-high 15 points. Four Hornets scored in double figures as the teams shot 43.1% from the field.
UCR was outrebounded by the Hornets, 40-33.
Morton was 0-for-3 from the field in the first half and looked a little rusty after having not practiced due to a slight concussion suffered in last week's win over St. Mary's. He rallied in the second half, scoring nine points.
The Highlanders trailed at the intermission 32-27 as the Hornets got nine points from Chris Lange, who finished with 11.
The Highlanders kick off the Big West Campaign on Saturday, January 3, 2004 as they host the University of the Pacific. UCR will then host Cal State Northridge on Monday, January 5th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PST.
