The University of Idaho feels right at home at Riverside.
The visiting Vandals defeated the host UC Riverside Highlanders 63-57 in overtime Thursday, their third win in three years at the Student Recreation Center. The win moved the Vandals to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the Big West. UCR fell to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in conference.
Idaho's Tyrone Hayes scored a game high 23 points and added seven rebounds. Nate Carter led the Highlanders with 19 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. Vili Morton had 18 points and eight rebounds.
The Highlanders struggled from the field, shooting just 19-of-62 (30.6%) on the night. They were 3-of-22 from the three point line.
UCR trailed by as many as eight in the second half before rallying to take the lead at 47-46 on a layup by Vili Morton at 3:47. The teams were tied at 51-51 with 30 seconds left with Hayes at the line for a two-shot foul, but he missed both ends. The Highlanders' Carter got the rebound and UCR called time out to set up a final play. However, Morton's 10 foot jumper from the baseline with 2 seconds left missed long and the game went into overtime.
Idaho jumped out to a six point lead in the extra frame, then held on as UCR cut it to three with 32 seconds left.
The Highlanders return to action on Thursday, January 24th as they host Utah State.
