2/12/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The UC Riverside Highlanders held on for a 77-75 win over visiting Long Beach State University in front of a crowd of 612 at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Thursday.
The Highlanders moved to 7-12 overall and 4-7 in the Big West and Long Beach fell to 6-15, 4-8. The win snapped the Highlanders' five game losing streak.
Vili Morton had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of play. All five Highlander starters scored in double figures. Kevin Butler had 14 points, Rickey Porter had 15, Nate Carter had 13 and Mark Peters had 10. LBSU's Kevin Roberts had 14 points.
UCR jumped out to a 58-40 lead with 14:31 remaining in the game, capping a 16-6 run to open the half. However, the 49ers chipped away at the UCR lead, cutting the margin to 10 at 60-50 with 8:50 on a layup by Chris Jenkins. The Highlander lead became even more tenuous in the final minutes as Kevin Houston's layup made the score 73-69 with 2:25 left.
With 1:32 remaining, Kevin Houston picked the ball from Mark Peters and fed Jibril Hodges, whose layup made the score 75-72. Peters' layup with 59 seconds remaining made it 77-72, but a breakdown on defense following a timeout gave Chris Jenkins an open three pointer that he drained with 46 seconds left. LBSU had one last chance in the final seconds, but Houston was picked by Peters to clinch the win for UCR.
Morton nearly recorded a double-double in the first half, scoring 11 points and recording nine rebounds.
UCR hosts UC Irvine on Saturday at 3:00 PM. The game will be telecast on Fox Sports West 2.
