Highlanders Cruise to 72-54 Win Over Irvine
2/14/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The UC Riverside Highlanders exorcised a plethora of demons Saturday with a convincing 72-54 win over UC Irvine in front of a crowd of 863 at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
The win moved UCR to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the Big West, while Irvine dropped to 9-13 overall and 4-9 in the Big West. The win was the first for the Highlanders over the Anteaters in the Division I era and the first time that they had beaten UCI at all since February 8th, 1977. Also, it marked the first time that UCR was victorious in front of a regional television audience, breaking an 0-7 string. Most importantly, however, was that it moved UCR into a momentary tie for fourth in the Big West entering the remainder of the Saturday Big West schedule.
Sophomore forward Nate Carter had his fourth double-double of the season, a 14-point, 12-rebound effort and Rickey Porter came off the bench to set his career-high in scoring with 17 points. Mark Peters added nine points and Ted Bell had 10. For the Anteaters, Greg Ethington and Jeff Gloger each had 10 points.
The Highlanders came out and dominated in the second half, outscoring UCI 41-25 in the period to blow open a two-point halftime lead. UCI took the lead for the last time at 34-33 on a free throw by Parada with 17:14 left, but the Highlanders went on a 13-2 run, getting four free throws by Carter, a pair of free throws and a layup by Klaus Schille, a three by Ted Bell and a jumper by Peters to build a 46-36 lead with 13:59 remaining.
The lead continued to grow in the second half, building to a high of 23 at 69-46 with 3:58 remaining on a pair of free throws by Kevin Butler.
The Highlanders dominated the boards 35-21 and forced UCI into 16 turnovers. The Anteaters were just 7-of-16 from the free throw line, offsetting a pretty good night from the field overall (21-of-48, 43.8%).
UCR shot 53.1% from the field, their third best mark of the season. It was the first time since December 22nd that they eclipsed the 50% barrier. UCR also moved to 7-1 in games were they scored more than 70 points.
The win was the 450th of Coach John Masi's career.
UCR travels to face Utah State on Thursday at 7PM PST. The game will be broadcast over the Highlander television network.
