2/19/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
For the second time this year the Highlanders went toe to toe with the conference leading and No. 25 ranked Utah State Aggies, but once again came up just shot as the Aggies held on for a 77-72 overtime victory at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan Thursday.
UCR is now 8-13 overall and 5-8 in the Big West, and Utah State is 21-2, 13-1.
Nate Carter led all scorers with 19 points, Mark Peters added 14 and Matt Benson came off the bench to score 11. Spencer Nelson had 15 points, Cardell Butler and 14, and Nate Harris and Mark Brown each had 13 for the Aggies.

UCR cut the magin to 72-69 on a Carter put back. However, on the next possession, UCR's Mark Peters drove and attempted a layup but was swatted by Harris. UCR fouled Huber, who missed both free throws. However, Chad Evans stepped in and picked up the rebound, resetting the offense for the Aggies.
The Aggies took a 74-69 lead on a pair of free throws by Butler, but Bell came down and drained a trey with 13.6 seconds left to make the score 74-72. Brown was fouled with 9.6 seconds left, but only converted one of the free throws. UCR came down and took a quick three that missed and the Aggies converted the final two free throws to seal the win.
The teams were tied at 62-62 with 34.1 seconds remaining and Utah State in possession of the ball. The Aggies ran the clock down for a final shot, but Butler's shot was blocked by Kevin Butler. After a conference by the referees, the clock was set to 2.6 seconds. The Aggies fouled the Highlanders with 1.3 seconds left and UCR was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
The Highlanders trailed 33-28 entering halftime and had no offensive boards in the first half. UCR got their first offensive rebound on a Vili Morton put back, and UCR scored the first six points of the half to take a 34-33 lead.
