Highlanders Bounce Back But Can't Hold on at Idaho, 70-65
2/21/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The UC Riverside Highlanders held a lead with under two minutes to go at Idaho Saturday, but the host Vandals outscored UCR 8-3 in the final 90 seconds to pull out a 70-65 win at the Cowan Spectrum.
UCR is now 8-14 overall and 5-9 in the Big West, and Idaho is 12-14, 8-7. The Vandals have won seven-of-their last eight games.
Kevin Butler led all scorers with 18 points, Vili Morton added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Nate Carter had 11 points in limited minutes due to foul trouble. UCR was hampered by 17 turnovers.
Idaho's Tyrone Hayes led the Vandals with 14 points, and Rashaad Powell and Dwayne Williams each had 12.
The second half was a see-saw affair that saw both teams build small leads, only to see the other team come back. UCR took a 62-60 lead on a spinning layup by Nate Carter, but Tanoris Shepherd ansered with a three pointer to give the Vandals the lead. Following a Kevin Butler miss, Tyrone Hayes was fouled by Carter and drained both his free throws for a 65-62 lead.
The game turned on the next possession, as Shephered stole the ball from Peters with 27.4 seconds remaining and made one of two free throws. Butler sunk a three pointer with under 10 seconds left to cut the margin to 69-65, but Dandrick Jones hit a FT with one second left to set the final margin at five.
