Fullerton Comes Back to Defeat UCR, 69-66

The Cal State Fullerton Titans overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders 69-66 in a Big West match-up at Titan Gym in Fullerton Saturday.
Fullerton moved to 7-12, 3-7. UCR lost it's fifth straight and fell to 6-12, 3-7.
Nate Carter led all scorers with 25 points and Vili Morton had 12 before fouling out and Rickey Porter had 11. Fullerton's Pape Sow had 23 points and 12 rebounds and was 13-of-15 from the free throw line.
UCR held a 40-26 lead at the intermission, but the Titans came out on fire, scoring the first 12 points of the half and holding UCR scoreless until the 14:34 mark, when Morton's dunk ended the drought. The Titans tied the game at 44-44 on Bobby Brown's three with with 13:03 remaining, then grabbed the lead for the first time at 47-46 on a three by Zakee Smith at 11:40.
The Titans built their lead to as many as five, but UCR cut it to three at 62-60 with 3:07 remaining. The Titans built the margin back to four at 65-61. With 51.6 seconds left, Klaus Schille hit a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 65-63. However the Titans got a basket by Anthony Bolton with 25 seconds left, then a pair of free throws by Hardy Aspirilla to clinch the win. Carter hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, his only field goal of the half, to make the final score 69-66
The Highlanders opened the game with a kick and back-to-back fast break layups by Rickey Porter on fast breaks off of passes by Brett Ost helped key a 9-0 run to give UCR a 23-9 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first half. The Titans offense began to heat up as Sow scored all 15 of the Titans points - including nine free throws - over the final 7:38 of the half, but the Highlanders scored six points in the final ninety seconds to take a 40-24 lead into the intermission.
UCR returns home to host Long Beach State on Thursday, February 12. Tip off is at 7:00 PM.
