No. 19 Colorado 0, UC Riverside 0 (4-3 PKs) - Box Score
Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside women's soccer team was eliminated 4-3 on penalty kicks by #19 University of Colorado in an NCAA First Round game Friday night in front of 874 fans at UCLA's Drake Stadium. The Highlanders finish their season at 11-4-6 while the Buffaloes move on with a record of 12-7-4.
After a scoreless 110 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the game went into a penalty shootout. UCR, which had needed penalties to advance in the Big West Tournament last Friday versus Long Beach State, did not change its shooting lineup and had the distinction of going second against Colorado.
The Buffaloes led off with Fran Munnelly, whose shot successfully found the upper right corner of the goal. UCR answered through junior midfielder Linda Allen's low shot to the right corner. Katie Griffin put CU ahead 2-1 with a low shot to the left and senior midfielder Renee Scachetti followed suit to tie it up. After Allison Kidd gave Colorado another advantage, junior defender Amber Plumlee saw her shot into the upper right corner saved by CU goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski. That gave the Buffaloes the opportunity to clinch on the next shot but Darci Smerchek's attempt hit the left post and bounced out. UCR drew level at 3-3 as freshman forward Melina Triantos found the right corner. With the fifth penalty, Ashlie Mihalcin scored, leaving UCR freshman forward Stacie Anderson needing to score to send the shootout into sudden death. Anderson's shot went wide of the left post.
Making their NCAA postseason debut, the Highlanders wanted to show Colorado they belonged in the tournament. The Buffaloes controlled much of the possession for all 110 minutes but the UCR defense was equal to the task, repelling every onslaught. CU held a 20-2 advantage in shots, including 17-1 in regulation, but the feisty Highlanders refused to give in, posting their fourth shutout in the last five games and tenth of the season.
In the first half, CU almost got on the board but Kidd's shot from 18 yards went wide. UCR had its only shot attempt of regulation in the 22nd minute, when junior midfielder Shayna Hufford's long-range effort was saved by Radlinski. After that it was all Colorado, with the speedy Buffaloes continually attacking but the Highlanders holding firm through tough defense and several saves from junior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio. In the 26th minute, Poggio dove low to her right to deny Munnelly off a free kick.
In the second half, Colorado twice hit the side netting - first from Kidd in the 49th minute and once by Kathryn Grandinetti 10 minutes from time. Poggio also went full-extension to stop a free kick by Griffin in the 65th minute.
Poggio finished the match with eight saves, leaving her second on the UCR single-season record list with 108. Radlinski made just the one save for Colorado.
This was the first meeting between these two teams and the first in the postseason between the Big West and Big 12 conferences.
The Highlanders closed out their historic season unbeaten in 12 of their final 13 matches. UCR also never lost in overtime, tying all six of its extra period contests to set a new school record.
Colorado advances to Sunday's second round match, where they will face #4 UCLA, who beat Mississippi Valley State 9-0 earlier Friday.
