The UC Riverside Highlanders lost an 86-66 decision to the host University of the Pacific Tigers in a Big West Conference game in front of 3,866 fans at the Spanos Center in Stockton Saturday.
UCR is 5-19, 1-9 in the Big West, while Pacific improves to 9-14, 5-5.
The Highlanders had outstanding performances by freshman forward Henrik Thomsen, who recorded a career- and game-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 6-of-12 from the three point line. Junior forward Larry Cunningham continued his hot streak with 19 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as once again the Highlanders found themselves on the short end of the rebounding ledger, losing the battle of the boards 43-25.
The Tigers outscored the Highlanders in the paint, 44-24, identical to the margin of victory. For the Tigers, Reggie Vezia lead four scorers in double figures with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
UCR led by four in the early going, the last time at 11-7 with 15:04 remaining, but a 12-3 Pacific run over the next four and a half minutes turned the tide. UCR trailed by as many as 14 in the half before cutting the margin to 10 at the intermission. UCR had another hot start in the second half and cut the margin to five at 40-35 with 17:00 remaining, but again the Tigers roared away, this time on a 19-3 run that put it out of reach for the Highlanders.
