The UC Riverside Highlanders and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos went down to the wire, but it was the Gauchos who prevailed in a 68-67 win in a Big West contest in front of 1,352 fans at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Saturday.
The Gauchos are 16-10 overall, 7-5 in the Big West, while UCR is now 6-22 overall and 1-12 in the Big West.
The game came down to the final possessions, but UCSB Cecil Brown's short jumper with seven seconds left gave the Gauchos the 68-67 lead. UCR had a shot at the game winner, but freshman guard Charles Jim-George's three point attempt went long as the buzzer sounded.
UCR freshman forward Henrik Thomsen led the Highlanders with 15 points and junior guard Larry Cunningham had 14. Sophomore guard Chris Johnson had 13 off of the bench and senior guard Justin Bell had 11 in a full 40 minutes of play. UCR had just seven turnovers in the game. UCR shot 42.1% (24-of-57) overall and 34.6% (9-of-26) from the three point line.
The Gauchos' Alex Harris led all scorers with 25 points, and Brown had 16. UCSB shot 57.8% (26-of-45) from the field and 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the three point line. They outrebounded UCR, 31-23.
UCR had trailed most of the half, but cut the margin to one at 61-60 on a three-pointer by Bell with 2:50 left. The Gauchos led 64-60 when sophomore forward Christian Soto put-back a Cunningham miss to cut the margin to two. Moments later the Gauchos turned over the inbounds pass, and the Highlanders called timeout. On the inbounds, Cunningham lost the handle momentarily, but recovered and drove to the hoop, finding an open Bell in the corner. Bell drained the open three to give UCR a 67-66 lead with 28 seconds left, setting up the thrilling ending.
The Gauchos took a 34-29 lead into the intermission behind 13 points by Harris. The Gauchos shot 53.8% (14-of-26) from the field and 44.4% (4-of-9) from the three point line. UCR was 34.6% (9-of-26) overall and 38.5% (5-of-13) from the arc. UCSB led by as many as eight in the half, but the Highlanders kept the margin from getting out of hand.
