9/16/2007 4:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Gardner-Webb 0 - Box Score
Riverside—The UCR Highlanders (4-2-0) needed only one first half goal to record the 1-0 victory over the visiting Gardner-Webb Bulldogs (2-4-0).
For the second straight match the women dominated play in all facets of the game. Letty Villalpando’s unassisted goal was all the Highlanders needed to win their second consecutive match. Villalpando’s first goal of the season was a thing of beauty, as she dribbled through three defenders from midfield and delivered a blast at the top of the 18-yard box, beating the keeper to the left side of the goal. The goal in the 30th minute was follwed a few minutes later by the play of the match.
Brittany Goetz got the start in goal for UCR and soon after Villalpando’s goal, she made a game saving stop. GWU’s Brittany Woods picked up a loose ball just inside Highlanders’ territory and found herself in a favorable one-on-one situation. She dribbled inside the 18-yard box and tried to beat Goetz with a shot to the left side of the goal, but the keeper made a diving stab, pushing the ball out of harm’s way.
The home team played the second half very well. Ball control was a key to holding on to the lead and the team recorded its second straight shutout.
The Highlanders remain at home when they host Fresno State this Friday at the UCR Soccer Stadium at 3:00 pm. The game followes a 12:00 pm UCR men’s soccer match against Cal State Bakersfield.
