The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (7-15, 2-5) lost to UC Santa Barbara (8-10, 4-3) in three sets on Saturday evening, but made the Gauchos work for match point as the third set closed out at 28-26.
UCR was down 17-11 in the third but rallied to tie the game at 23 apiece off a Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kill. The Highlanders and Gauchos then traded points until Rebecca Saraceno finished out the match with two straight kills.
Dominique Cowling (Benicia, CA) had a game-high 15 kills and 13 digs for the Highlanders, while Fink contributed 13 kills and Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) added a game-high 14 digs.
After losing the first set 25-19, UCR fell behind in the second, but some spectacular kills by Dominique Cowling inspired the crowd and rallied the Highlanders: down 15-10 after a timeout, UCR scored six points to the Gauchos’ one to tie the set at 16 apiece. However, after another 17-17 tie, UCSB scored seven straight points before UCR could net one, and went on to take the set 25-18.
UC Riverside begins the second half of their Big West schedule on Saturday, Oct. 25 as they travel to UC Irvine for a 7:00 pm start.
