UCR Volleyball Loses to Fullerton in Five Sets

The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (5-12, 0-2) battled through five sets against Cal State Fullerton (7-10, 1-2) in Big West Conference action en route to a 3-2 loss on Friday evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
Down 10-7 in the first, UCR went on a seven to three rally capped off by a Dominique Cowling (Benicia, CA) service ace. The Highlanders kept pounding away at the Titons and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set to claim a 25-22 victory.
The second and third sets got away from the Highlanders as Fullerton won 25-21 and 25-15. Determined to force a decisive fifth set, UCR charged back and won the fourth 25-12 in convincing fashion. The Highlanders built an early 8-1 lead off a kill by Kelly Simpson (Modesto, CA) and never looked back. They led by as many as 13 points at two different junctures in the game before taking the set.
Trailing at match point 14-7 in the fifth, UCR rallied three straight points off two Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kills and a Titon error before ultimately losing the set 15-10.
Cowling paced the Highlanders with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kelly Fink added 14 kills while Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) recorded 10 digs and Shannon Moyneur (Valley Center, CA) had a hand in seven blocks. Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) added 28 assists to her climbing total; she is currently fifth on the all-time assist list.
Tonight’s game was the first of back-to-back conference games for UCR. The Highlanders finish their two-game homestand against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 pm in Riverside.
